The Federation of Private Medical Practitioners' Associations, which represents some 5,000 private doctors nationwide, has joined hands with others in the medical profession in calling for the release of Sungai Siput MP Dr D Jeyakumar.

"We are extremely concerned at the continued detention of our colleague, Dr Jeyakumar Devaraj, whom we all recognise and acknowledge as a law-abiding, competent, kind and diligent doctor.

azlan"His public service record is exemplary and, to the very best of our knowledge, he is certainly not a threat to our society," the federation said in a media statement today.

It quoted Jeyakumar's long tenure in government service and charitable work as "selflessly serving the rakyat", reminding that the good doctor was well known for his capacity for charity and kindness for all under his care, regardless of ethnicity and religion.

"We, appeal to have the detention order against Dr Michael Jeyakumar lifted," said the statement, which also appealed for the release of the other Parti Sosialis Malaysia members who are being detained under similar circumstances.

Jeyakumar and five other PSM members are currently being held under the Emergency Ordinance for alleged involvement in planning the outlawed Bersih 2.0 rally for electoral reforms.

Prior to this, 176 medical practitioners have issued similar calls for his release.

RELEASE "EO6" & Dr. Jeyakumar- NOW, Hisham!!!

176 doctors call for release of 'PSM 6'
Jul 17, 11 5:26pm

One hundred and seventy-six medical professionals today called for the release of PSM's Dr Michael D Jeyakumar and five others who are currently under Emergency Ordinance (EO) detention.

In a statement released today, individual doctors as well as members of the Perak branch of the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) and the Perak Medical Practitioners Society expressed concern that Jeyakumar and the others were still in police custody three weeks after they were picked up at Sungai Dua, Penang.

They also said they were troubled by the prolonged and “illegal” detention of the 'PSM 6' - as they have come to be known - as well as the deterioration of Jeyakumar's health under detentioin.

Since his arrest on June 25, Jeyakumar has been brought to the hospital twice for medical treatment for his heart condition.

“Dr Jeyakumar and five other Socialist Party of Malaysia members were 'illegally' detained under the Emergency Ordinance recently. They have been placed in a cruel and unjust situation....

“We say that the detention is 'illegal' because till today, there is no solid and could someone with such immaculate professional standing and exemplary be an enemy to the country!

“The home minister must make every effort to secure the immediate release of Dr Jeyakumar and do justice to both his ministerial duties and to Dr Jeyakumar,” they said in their statement.

Jeyakumar was one of 30 PSM activists arrested on June 25 for allegedly 'waging war against the Agong' when materials purportedly promoting communism were found with them while on a roadshow.

From being investigated under 122 of the Penal Code, however, Jeyakumar and five others were re-arrested soon after being released from remand.

It was made known subsequently that the 'PSM 6', as they have come to be known, were being detained under Section 3(1) of the EO for threatening the 'public order'.

The EO is similar to the Internal Security Act, which allows police to detain suspects for up to 60 days.

PSM has described the accusations against PSM and its activists as "false allegations" and a reflection of the authorities' "ill will" against the party.

Stressing their “strictly apolitical” stance, the doctors said they were acting as colleagues of Dr Jeayakumar, “who is also an active and much respected member of the MMA” and whose family is much respected for their outstanding social work.

Jeyakumar family has contributed enormously towards the development of the healthcare services in our country.

“The government has rightly spoken much about transformation and change, and this is something every loyal citizen endorses.

“But what appear to be the deployment of Cold war tactics by resurrecting the “communist” and “foreign” bogeyman on political rivals in these days only serves to dissuade the public that the government is earnest in its efforts to bring about civil changes that would be in line with first world societies.”

Noting that Malaysia sits on the United Nations' Human Rights Council, the doctors called on the government to do justice to its position on this council by according and recognising the human rights of the PSM 6.

“The least that the Malaysian government can do is to live up to the ideals of the Human Rights Council รข”€ and not violate the very rights that the government has been charged to defend steadfastly.”

“In view of this obligation, it will be totally unjustified to continue the 'illegal' detention of Dr Jeyakumar and his team without giving them a fair trial in court.

“The government should do justice to its position on this council and convince Malaysians that there is no malice on their part. Denying Dr Jeyakumar and his team the right to defend themselves is denying them justice.”

Tung Shin Challenges Doctors- Time for Doctors to Speak-Up ...

The doctors who witnessed the police attack on Tung Shin Hospital are ready to provide further evidence if the statement they issued yesterday is rebutted by the government.

However, they will nt reveal any further details on their account of the incident until their statement is challenged by the authorities, their spokeperson Dr Sheikh Johari Bux said today.

'Docs may have been demonstrators'

In a related development, Chong Teck Hong, honorary general secretary of Tung Shin Hospital board, told Malaysiakini that only two out of the 11 doctors who signed the statement are with the hospital.

Chong said he does not know the motive of those behind the statement, but said he assumes some of the doctors had joined the rally and had sought shelter at Tung Shin Hospital.

He also reiterated Liow's assertion that police did not shoot water cannon and tear gas at the hospital.

Doctors blast police attack on hospitals, ready to issue affidavits

(Harakah Daily) - A group of senior medical doctors today issued a joint statement expressing outrage at the authorities' handling of the Bersih rally, specifically when police fired tear gas into the compounds of the Tung Shin and Chinese Maternity Hospitals along Jalan Pudu.

PICTURE PROOF ... The Tung Shin hospital building being fired upon, July 9

Saying hospitals should be "safe sanctuaries for all" and "consecrated places of refuge" even during war time, the eleven doctors and surgeons, some of whom serve at the said hospitals, also condemned the police for entering the hospital buildings in search of some protesters fleeing from the police attacks.

"What was most frightening and witnessed by many was the unprovoked violent assault within the hospital compounds and apprehension of several protesters who had merely ran into the hospitals to seek shelter from the tear gas and the water cannons!" they said in a statement emailed to Harakahdaily, the first public reaction by medical doctors following the police's denial that its men had shot tear gas into hospital compounds on July 9.

This was followed by a press conference held by Health minister Liow Tiong Lai, claiming that the police did not shoot tear gas and water cannon into the Tung Shin Hospital compound and that allegations on the contrary were not true.

A number of video recordings however showed that tear gas had indeed been fired into the Tung Shin vicinities, with a Bar Council report of its observation into the July 9 protests confirming the incident.

'Prepared for sworn affidavits'

The statement, signed by Dr Musa Nordin, Dr Sheikh Johari Bux, Dr Ng Kwee Boon, Dr Ng Swee Choon, Dr Ronald Macoy, Dr David Quek, Dr Mary Cardozo, Dr. Farouk Musa, Dr. Mazeni Alwi, Dr Pixie Low and Dr Steve Wong, also blasted the authorities for "shamelessly" denying the occurrence of these incidents in spite of evidences and eye-witness accounts.

"It is repulsive that the authorities entrusted with policing the nation and protecting the weak and needy, have shamelessly denied publicly, the occurrence of these incidents in spite of countless photos, videos and eye-witness accounts of what was evident to all independent observers," it said.

Saying they did not wish to join the polemics in the aftermath of the massive rally called by the electoral reforms group Bersih, the doctors, some of whom were on duty at the affected hospitals during the incident, said they were ready to provide sworn affidavits "if required, as to the veracity of the incidents."

The statement also reminded public office holders to discharge their duties with "moral integrity, dignity and transparency".

"Their failure to do so raises the public’s doubt in their competence and credibility as much as it demeans those in the high offices," it stressed.

Najib & The Archbishop "Controversy"

*********************
To a leader of the Pope's intellectual mettle, it would be an embarrassment
for Pakiam to play the role of equerry on behalf of one who needs
to do some serious thinking about universal values,
the promotion of which is the aim of Benedict's push
for dialogue between Muslims and Christians.
-Terence Netto, Bishop's place in Najib's team to Vatican unseemly,
Malaysiakini
*****************************

**************************

Aside from the Holy See’s independent standing, nuncios enjoy other advantages over their secular counterparts. As talent scouts, looking for new bishops in the countries they serve, they are close to the Church in their locality and consequently ‘nearer to the ground’ than members of other diplomatic corps. They also tend to occupy a generally privileged place within a nation’s political establishment, given their direct links with Catholics from the grassroots to the highest levels of religion and politics. Yet many outsiders make the mistake of confusing the Holy See with Vatican City State, viewing it as merely 0.2 square miles of land in Rome.
~ Vatican Diplomacy, Diplomat magazine
**********************************

Allow me to begin by saying that The Vatican is the smallest state in the world, of which the Pope is the Head of State- just as he is the spiritual "CEO" of the Catholic Church.
In the modern Church, not all bishops occupy pastoral positions as the heads of dioceses and several dioceses are so large as to require more than one bishop rather than divide the diocese into smaller dioceses. Many Bishops are Papal Diplomats, and many Dioceses have one or more "Auxiliary Bishops" assisting the Bishop.

As such- the Vatican sends out political emissaries/envoys / diplomats/ "ambassadors" to states with which it has ties- the vital roles played by them in International diplomacy cannot be underestimated. They have played major roles in political developments from peace in Lebanon to the fall of the Soviet Empire. In states that do not have diplomatic ties- "Apostolic Delegates" are appointed to oversee the faithful of the catholic Church.
You may google up "Apostolic Nuncio" or "Vatican Diplomacy" to find out more ..... or even look up Wikipedia if you must.

Let's come back to Bolehland .... where "sensitive BolehBrains bay for blood" in their vocal bravado, over nonsensical sensitivities ..... especially after 308 - and now after "BERSIH 2.0".

Malaysia has the "distinction" of being one of the basket (case) of nations without any diplomatic relations to the Holy See (aka "Vatican City").
Wikipedia states that "There are sixteen internationally recognized states with which the Holy See does not have diplomatic relations.
They are: Afghanistan, Bhutan, Brunei, Burma, Comoros, Laos, Malaysia, Maldives, Mauritania, North Korea, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Tuvalu, Vietnam, and the People's Republic of China."

Recently word has come out that Najib intends to seek the audience of the Pope "in his personal capacity" with a view to establish diplomatic ties.
So, Malaysia is one of the few nations in the world which do not have formal ties with the Vatican- as such, we do not have a Papal envoy/ ambassador (aka Apostolic Nuncio).

Archbishop Leopoldo Girelli (58)Archbishop Leopoldo Girelli (58)
(2011.01.13 – ...) Titular Archbishop of Capri
Apostolic Nuncio of Timor-Leste
Apostolic Nuncio of Singapore
Apostolic Delegate of Brunei
Apostolic Delegate of Malaysia
Pontifical Representative of Vietnam
Apostolic Nuncio of ASEAN
*****************************

That being the case, although Archbishop Leopoldo Girelli (above) may be the Apostolic Delegate (who isn't politically recognized by the Malaysian Govt since he's an unilateral appointee)- I'd presume that the Bishop of the Archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur/Selangor (Archbishop Murphy Pakiam) would by default become the official chief representative of the Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI in Malaysia- according to the hierarchy.

Now- When the CEO of Malaysia requests an audience with the Pope, I'd presume that he would have made such a request through the Archbishop.

News has come out that His Grace would be accompanying Najib on his trip- and Mr. "Bombastic" Terence Netto has led the pack of ignoramuses in "reprimanding" His Grace for agreeing to accompany najib.

(FYI, I hear from reliable sources that His Grace hasn't actually "officially" agreed to accompany Najib on the entourage- and that he may appoint another representative to do so to please these baying ignoramuses, who mistake the trees for the forest).

Anyway, had it been diplomatic protocol for His Grace to introduce Najib to the Holy Father- I really don't see anything wrong with him accompanying Najib as an intermediary, even if they were "at each other's throats" politically or personally.
As far as I know in diplomatic circles (or any religion for that matter), any intermediary in resolving disputes should be welcome- even if one party were a terrorist.

I really don't understand what this intellectual-midget of a Mr.Bombastic (and his ilk) hopes to achieve by encouraging His Grace to show hostility towards Najib. I really do not see what ill would come out of His grace representing Malaysian Catholics (and Christians, if you wish) with a view towards establishing ties with the Holy See.

Did he say something about "impressions" created?
I suppose he'd be pleased if we gave an impression hostility ... maybe he hopes that a snub from the Catholic Church would make the Malaysian Govt even more enthusiastic in establishing diplomatic ties with the Holy See. Maybe he thinks that would help the Church and Malaysians in general.
Maybe he'd like His Grace to come out with some kind of fatwa to demonize Umno ... maybe even call for Najib's head on a silver platter to solve all problems?

Does this Terence Netto not see the benefits of establishing cordial ties with the Vatican on a conciliatory note?
Who is he anyway to dictate terms to His Grace, who has courageously stood up for the Constitutional rights of all Christians (regardless of denominational affiliations) when people like him were still silent as church mice?

God help me ........ how I hate all these unthinking, vocal & bombastic newbies who bay like heroes today, but were conveniently silent (or "politically correct") during the blatant harassment & persecution by the authorities back then when we first started out to create a political awakening in Malaysian society ...
They just disgust me- I can only imagine what Raja Petra thinks of these "heroes" today ......
