Confident People Do Not Get Confused

"In 2007, the Majlis Agama Negeri Perlis,
which is a large majlis filled with people
very learned in Islamic religious knowledge,
discussed the question of the use of 'Allah' by non-Muslims.
Their unanimous decision? They issued a fatwa to say that there is absolutely nothing wrong with non-Muslims using the word at all.
(This was told to me by Dr. Asri but I cannot find the fatwa anywhere online because all the religious departments' websites are so useless.)

Are we now going to excommunicate the whole of Perlis?"
~ Marina Mahathir

I found by chance this article the other day:

Prophet Muhammad’s Promise to Christians

By Marina Mahathir

The document is not a modern human rights treaty but even thought it was penned in 628 A.D. it clearly protects the right to property, freedom of religion, freedom of work, and security of the person, says Muqtedar Khan.

Muslims and Christians together constitute over fifty percent of the world and if they lived in peace, we will be half way to world peace. One small step that we can take towards fostering Muslim-Christian harmony is to tell and retell positive stories and abstain from mutual demonization.

In this article I propose to remind both Muslims and Christians about a promise that Prophet Muhammed (pbuh) made to Christians. The knowledge of this promise can have enormous impact on Muslim conduct towards Christians. Muslims generally respect the precedent of their Prophet and try to practice it in their lives.

In 628 AD, a delegation from St. Catherine’s Monastery came to Prophet Muhammed and requested his protection. He responded by granting them a charter of rights, which I reproduce below in its entirety. St. Catherine’s Monastery is located at the foot of Mt. Sinai and is the world’s oldest monastery. It possesses a huge collection of Christian manuscripts, second only to the Vatican, and is a world heritage site. It also boasts the oldest collection of Christian icons. It is a treasure house of Christian history that has remained safe for 1400 years under Muslim protection.

The Promise to St. Catherine:

"This is a message from Muhammad ibn Abdullah, as a covenant to those who adopt Christianity, near and far, we are with them.
Verily I, the servants, the helpers, and my followers defend them, because Christians are my citizens; and by God! I hold out against anything that displeases them.
No compulsion is to be on them. Neither are their judges to be removed from their jobs nor their monks from their monasteries. No one is to destroy a house of their religion, to damage it, or to carry anything from it to the Muslims' houses.
Should anyone take any of these, he would spoil God's covenant and disobey His Prophet. Verily, they are my allies and have my secure charter against all that they hate.
No one is to force them to travel or to oblige them to fight. The Muslims are to fight for them. If a female Christian is married to a Muslim, it is not to take place without her approval. She is not to be prevented from visiting her church to pray. Their churches are to be respected. They are neither to be prevented from repairing them nor the sacredness of their covenants.
No one of the nation (Muslims) is to disobey the covenant till the Last Day (end of the world)."

The first and the final sentence of the charter are critical. They make the promise eternal and universal. Muhammed asserts that Muslims are with Christians near and far straight away rejecting any future attempts to limit the promise to St. Catherine alone. By ordering Muslims to obey it until the Day of Judgment the charter again undermines any future attempts to revoke the privileges. These rights are inalienable. Muhammed declared Christians, all of them, as his allies and he equated ill treatment of Christians with violating God’s covenant.

A remarkable aspect of the charter is that it imposes no conditions on Christians for enjoying its privileges. It is enough that they are Christians. They are not required to alter their beliefs, they do not have to make any payments and they do not have any obligations. This is a charter of rights without any duties!

The document is not a modern human rights treaty but even thought it was penned in 628 A.D. it clearly protects the right to property, freedom of religion, freedom of work, and security of the person.

I know most readers, must be thinking so what? Well the answer is simple. Those who seek to foster discord among Muslims and Christians focus on issues that divide and emphasize areas of conflict. But when resources such as Muhammad’s promise to Christians are invoked and highlighted it builds bridges. It inspires Muslims to rise above communal intolerance and engenders good will in Christians who might be nursing fear of Islam or Muslims.

When I look at Islamic sources, I find in them unprecedented examples of religious tolerance and inclusiveness. They make me want to become a better person. I think the capacity to seek good and do good inheres in all of us. When we subdue this predisposition towards the good, we deny our fundamental humanity. In this holiday season, I hope all of us can find time to look for something positive and worthy of appreciation in the values, cultures and histories of other peoples.

Now, when that delegation from St Catherine's monastery came to meet with Prophet Mohamad (pbuh), I suppose it's fair to assume that they spoke Arabic to one another. And when they were conversing, surely the word 'God' must have come up. As in "May God Be With You" and such like. What word did the Prophet (pbuh) use for 'God' I wonder? And what did the St Catherinians use in return? For monotheists like them, was there a 'your God' and 'my God' type of situation, or did they understand that they were both talking about the same One?

Don't Worry - It Never Happened!!

By Asrul Hadi Abdullah Sani

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 11 — Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Ismail Omar has denied that a Sidang Injil Borneo (SIB) church in Seremban was attacked today.

The SIB church in Negri Sembilan’s capital was attacked today with a firebomb, leaving scorch marks on its front doors.

The doors of the SIB church in Seremban show signs of scorching.

The attack did not affect the church interior and was believed to have occurred early this morning.

“What I know is that it did not happen. Where did you get this information from? That is what I want to know. You must double check,” Ismail told reporters after attending a briefing for foreign diplomats on the current situation in the country.

Rasah member of Parliament, Loke Siew Fook visited the church soon after the attack and confirmed the incident.

“The worship hall was not affected, the attack only affected the front door,” Loke told The Malaysian Insider.

Meanwhile, Negri Sembilan police chief Datuk Osman Salleh said a report has been lodged over the incident, but refused to provide any details.

Ismail gave his assurance that the police will continue to monitor the situation to ensure national security.

The following is the latest post from YB Mike (Kapar - P.109).

SHOOT AND BEATEN FOR NOT BRIBING BY POLICE

Trigger Happy Cops attack public again and this time they shoot a lorry driver for not giving money demanded by them.

21092007

S. Munisvaran, 25 a lorry driver whom regularly drives from Karak to Westport delivering goods for export was beaten and shoot on his lap by a traffic police officer somewhere near STAR CRUISE Terminal junction after he failed to give RM200.00 demand by the officer.

While resting at near Kemuning Toll (KESAS Expressway) at about 2.30am, Munisvaran was awaked by a Traffic Police Officer whom demanded his identity card and driving license. Upon , inspecting the vehicle the officer found the rear door wasn’t properly closed. Though the lorry was idle, the officer demanded RM 200.00 for not issuing any summons though Munisvaran requested him to issue summon since he has less then RM50.00 with him then. The officer only returned Munisvaran’s identity card while confiscate his driving license.

21092007001

The Traffic Police office followed Munisvaran and his assistant whom drive to towards Westport. He was punched on his stomach and beaten when stopped near Star Cruise Terminal junction (few kilometres before reaching Westport). A few minutes later the officer pulled out his gun and shoot him on his left lap, where the bullet pass through (A Close Rank Shoot).

Despite being injured, Munisvaran drove to Pandamaran Police Station to launch a report where he was arrested without any treatment for about 3 hours. Some few hours later police also arrested Munisvaran’s assistant N Antharajah, 22 from his work place.

Why do police arrest Munisvaran and his assistant? The reason given, is that Munisvaran pull out the gun from police officer and shoot himself. Creative answer, probably the officers might taught Malaysian love to hear Masala drama story. Still, why detainee Munisvaran even if he shoot himself and where about his assistant not known.

img_0639

I met his father R. Salapathirao at Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital, Klang whom rushed from Karak upon hearing his son was shoot and arrested. Upon checking the family background I’m convinced that Munisvaran was brought up in good manner and without any prior criminal record.

And, I have all the reason to believe Trigger Happy Cop all out to Kill Indians as long as they just find a simple reason. A Criminal by name of S Munisvaran was Official created by POLICE today for not having RM200.00 on his wallet. Thank Good Munisvaran escape alive if not another KUGAN ANANTHAN….

I hereby demand Inspector General of Police (IGP) to fully accept responsibility and answer why Munisvaran and Antharajah was arrested. He also must immediate answer why police didn’t arrest their colleague whom demanded bribe and why Munisvaran was shoot.

Tomorrow, R Salapathirao will launch a police report against Office that demanded bribe , shooting hazardously , and to demand his son’s immediate release.

Meanwhile myself and my lawyer will submit a Memorandum to Bukit Aman Police Headquarters to demand full investigation without any attempt of cover up and call police to sack the police officer involve in the mishap while demand action against those involve to coverup.

Within a short span of 9 months -
with a record number of scandals plaguing the Administration,
with a lame Judiciary,
with Utusan being permitted incitement,
with racism and religious bigotry at an all-time high in Umno's rhetoric,

with terrorism being subtly encouraged by "certain quarters",
his confession of being "powerless" to stop demonstration all of a sudden,
and the BN alliance in tatters,
Najib claims that his 1-Malaysia

UMNO HAS "LOST IT"!!

-------------------------------
"Where is the life we have lost in the living?
Where is the wisdom we have lost in knowledge?
Where is the knowledge we have lost in information ?
The cycles of heaven in twenty centuries
bring us farther from God and nearer to dust."
- T.S. Elliot
---------------------------------------------------

Back in 2006 I had written (published Jan, 2007) in "Where is the Spirit of Merdeka?" , I had written the following :-
"The spirit of Merdeka has been subverted by racists and the religious zealots over the years, and has been replaced by chauvinism – racial and religious..... Unfortunately, we are a society so paralyzed by symptomatic solutions one has to wonder whether we will learn anything from this mindless atrocity.......
They have failed so miserably to even convince themselves that they are on the right track, that they look for scapegoats all around them.

Having failed in its shortcut to an economic miracle, the advocates of the system (clamouring for issues and a new agenda to perpetuate their greed and envy) the now choose to preach intolerance, “arabisation”, and religiosity in the name of God, to further isolate, and “drug into a stupor” a beautiful people that was once open to change.

Even if we aren't too accurate in our assessment, much of what has passed-off for Islamisation by the govt was nothing more than frothy God-talk, mindless, thoughtless, and in its exploitation of people, heartless. The “one upmanship” practised by the various institutions that espouse religious chauvinism, is in fact a pathetic display of their failures and insecurities.

They need to feel that they are “winning” and wish to gloat about their “success” in being the defenders of their misplaced priorities, while hiding the enemies within, behind a cloak( turban or beard) of religiosity.
Malaysia today is a nation that has lost its conscience.
Lets hope that the soul still lives. "

but right where we are wrong"

Munsyi (teacher) Abdullah (1796-1854) will probably be turning in his grave (for having used "Allah" in his early Malay/Jawi translation of the bible), if he knew what Umno is doing today. It is given here on Tranungkite.com, that among Munsyi Abdullah's first works was a Malay/Jawi translation of the Bible. I reproduce here from that page :-
"Jemaah termanggu bila ditanya Ust. Nasharudin tentang antara hasil penulisan pertama Munsyi Abdullah yang kita gelarkan "Bapa Persuratan Melayu" tu...dan beristighfar panjang bila diberitahu antara hasil tulisan Munsyi yang pertama adalah translation BIBLE KE DALAM BAHASA MELAYU YANG DITULIS DALAM SKRIP JAWI!"

But in a 21st century Malaysia, they are afraid of the very things Malays/Muslims accepted centuries ago. That's how far back the Umno-Malay mindset has gone.
While in the past I still had hope that things could change- today, I dare say openly that Umno has lost it, and is irredeemably corrupt. They have stooped so low as to politicize a non-issue, which was there for centuries and caused no problems. Not just that, they have chosen to walk the path of hypocrisy & terrorism- they feign innocence but perpetrate terror among peaceful citizens.

The nation has been rocked by this senseless violence. True Muslims from all walks of life are disgusted by this act of intimidation. Malaysians are disgusted with fascist UMNO's hypocrisy. East Malaysian are shocked that what was their practice for centuries, has become an issue among the fascist Umno-ites.
While did not rule out the possibility that this would come to be, I hadn't expected UMNO to descend to such levels of depravity so fast, so soon.

It is obvious that Najib's leadership leaves much do be desired. Despite claiming that all is hunky-dory, word is that Najib is facing quite a bit of a challenge within the party. Never mind the scandals that plague his 9-month old administration or the increasingly corrupt practices alleged. Just like Pak Lah, Najib is definitely not a grassroots man - worse still, he's the one who once won his Pekan constituency through postal votes. Therefore this manufactured "crisis" with the help of Mr. Kris - wherein he can show his "leadership skills".
It was probably why the two cousins had initially supported the "right of them to demonstrate" as they had to "strike a balance". (Both had backtracked on this in less then 24 hrs, after coming under fire in cyber-space, with Krismoodin claiming to be only the postman/officeboy who passes the message for the Police).

Maybe it was out of this frustration, that these Molotov cocktails were lobbed into churches. With no retaliation coming from the side of Christians, taking cue from what happened in Sabah - I wouldn't rule out the possibility that they would stoop lower. Back in the days when BN sought to wrest power in Sabah, Mosques were apparently defaced by mercenaries (illegal immigrants), and this had triggered riots. This same MO (modus operandi) may just be in the works right now. In fact, I wouldn't rule out the possibility that that was what happened when the church was burned today, with many more being "given warnings" through "failed attempts". After all, what loss would it be to an illegal immigrant who wishes for freedom, and would return to his motherland anyway.
(this may turn out to be a blessing in disguise though - they have "successfully alienated" the Christians of both East & West Malaysia, and the Christian votes in Sabah/Sarawak is quite a vote bank!)

Most politicians came out in swift condemnation of this cowardly and dastardly act of violence. Pak Lah, despite being generally silent, has come out to condemn this of the dastardly act of burning houses of worship.
Take note that thus far, his mentor - Mahathir- is still silent on this issue (just as he was, after the Perak coup d'etat). But of course, when all has calmed down, he'll come around with his 2 sen worth of "wisdom" on the matter.
Are there some "hidden hands" at play here?

P.S.
It doesn't take a genius to know how the infamous "May 13" was manufactured, and who were the masterminds behind it. But of course - in the end, after thorough investigation, in true Bodohland style, no one (or maybe some ikan bilis) will be implicated ......
