BREAKING NEWS: I have just returned from the Shah Alam High Court after listening to a well argued judgement by Judge Syed Ahmad Helmy Syed Ahmad who ruled that Raja Petra’s detention was ultra vires and ordered the well known blogger’s immediate release from detention under the ISA.
The legal team was jointly led by Malek Imtiaz Sarvar and Art Harun with the assistance of J. Chandra and a host of lawyer friends of Raja Petra. Malek, Art and Chanrdra deserve our thanks for their thoroughly professional work.
Raja Petra is expected to appear in court before 4.00 p.m today (November 7, 2008) for his formal release from detention. Imagine the celebrations in the court premises where Marina Lee-Petra, her two daughters and Free RPK supporters had gathered since 7.00 am. There were tears of relief all round after hearing the f Judge’s decision that Raja Petra would released today. We all hugged each other. Even Big Man Haris Ibrahim, Bernard Zorro Khoo, Bangsar Bala, Visu and I could not hold back our emotions and tears as we witnessed a significant victory for the Malaysian people.
Bernard Zorro and I will join Marina (and hopefully Raja Petra himself) and others in Ipoh, Perak for a vigil to remember Malaysians who are still in Kamunting, Perak under the ISA on Sunday evening, November 8, 2008. A crowd of some 2,000 people are expected to turn up for this DAP-PR organised event.
In the meantime, we must anxiously await the ruling this afternoon on whether Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s so-called sodomy case will be transferred to the High Court . May the Obama effect prevail in Kuala Lumpur as it did in Shah Alam. We cannot be bogged done by legal actions taken against Anwar Ibrahim. I certainly want him to be free to speak on our behalf in Parliament and lead our country as the next Prime Minister—Din Merican
