Bkt Selambau : The Hindraf Dilemma
The writer said,"Have we forgotten the role that Hindraf played in making 8/3/08 possible? These are the people who, in their pain & desperation could do nothing else but put their bodies & their lives in the path of the FRU & their chemical cannons."
Let us be clear on one fact - while that protest/demonstration did "galvanize", the reason for its effect was very much due to the fact that it came at the heels of the Bersih rally and the widespread online campaign which was going on long before. It was successful beyond the wildest imagination of even the organisers themselves! Let it also be clear that at that time "Hindraf" was still avery much a pro-MIC/BN grouping which insisted that they support the leadership, and only the "delivery system" need be rectified.
It was only when they were snubbed by MIC/BN, that they turned to Pakatan Rakyat for support. Nevertheless, they did work together then, to achieve the March 8th tsunami, and PR did speak up for them, while the MIC/Umno/BN regime demonized them
So - who forgot whose contributions here, if I may ask?
Don't they realize that the anarchist street protest is the easiest part in starting a psychological revolution? That consistent & sustainable ideas/ leadership is pivotal in achieving it's goals?
Have they forgotten that it was PR which spearheaded the campaign to free ISA detainees?
That while street protests may ignite the flame, it cannot keep the fire going unless there is political leadership & will? That PR does not fight on a racist platform?
Don't they realize that they themselves have betrayed their own cause?
Do they realize that they have been "compromised"?
That PR isn't as naive, and are quite aware as that "racist moles" are quite active within the folds of the apparently "rudderless hindraf leadership"?
That "Rome was not built in a day"?
The following was my response to Malaysian Heart's letter:

The writer is mistaken in that he appears to presume that Malaysians have lost their sympathy for the issues represented by “Hindraf” on 25/11/07. This couldn’t be further from the truth. What has turned many away from the people who claim to be “leaders” (and many do claim it for themselves), is the fact that they sell themselves and their ideas in a very negative manner.
They have thus far only spoken from their own sectarian perspective and interests, and refuse to support any party unreservedly, despite having been given voice by the PR allies.
This they do, despite having been voiceless and spat on by BN for 50yrs!!
While what has been said may be very true, I believe that many hold to the idea that “Hindraf” is a cohesive organization. The fact of the matter is - it isn’t!
It is nothing but a “rag-tag” army of individuals with no real leadership. Worse still, few of their real “leaders” are politically savvy. They cannot articulate their ideas well and as such, don’t communicate well - not even among their own. With a vast majority of them only understand a sectarian agenda and nothing more. Anything else is beyond their comprehension - and educating their own doesn’t seem to be much much of a priority. The intelligentsia have all but abandoned them or has been incarcerated, and they are left with only the “mercenaries” shouting slogans.
They are prone to emotional reactions and generally speaking - have a quarrelsome attribute, which ultimately make them gullible to “propaganda”. With these characteristics, is it any wonder that they have fallen prey to the ministrations of Sammy Value and the BN racist politics?
With the many mercenaries in their fold, to hope that they get rid of their “selfish interests” would be a pipe-dream. They (the so-called “hindraf”) are so badly “penetrated by the “intelligence” of the BN that there is no conceivable way to determine who’s the “trojan” anymore. As a matter of fact, even the “leadership” has some difficulty in determining this.
It is very obvious that they (those claiming to be “coordinators”) have fallen victim to the MIC propaganda or “coercion”. This is evident from the “sympathy evoking” hospital visit of Sammy Vellu to see Thanenthiran. It is mind boggling that the media should highlight that Thanenthiran had a “heart attack”, but was in “cervical traction” instead of under CICU monitoring for the said “heart attack”. To make matters even more “glaring”, he has made a statement deriding the PR leadership for not calling or paying him a visit as Sammy did.
Any sane man will know what is happening here.
“Hindraf”, Makkal Sakthi or whatever this group may be had better get more organised and buck up- or they will just fragment and be merged once again under the MIC flag - for peanuts - in the name of “Indian Unity”!
While their case may be just, their ideas, leadership & “methods” leave much to be desired ….. therein lies the problem.

Khir Toyo's Disney tours cost more than RM1 million
SHAH ALAM, April 1 - Selangor investment arm Perbadanan Nasional Selangor Berhad (PNSB) paid a total of RM1.85 million for former Selangor Menter Besar Datuk Seri Mohd Khir Toyo's Disney tours to both Paris and Orlando in the United States.
The trip to Euro Disney was from 26th till 30th December 2004.
Khir and his delegates first went to Morocco and then had a five day transit in Dubai before going to Paris at a cost of RM416, 863.
The official delegation spent a total of RM416,000 and a team which went to make arrangements for the trip spent RM366,000.
Khir's second Disney trip was to Orlando from 23rd December 2007 to 1st January 2008, costing RM646, 841.
The delegates were also given an additional USD30,000 "pocket money" and therefore the total expenses for the trip amounted to RM750,000.
The state government paid RM336,531 first class tickets for airfare to Orlando and Honolulu while RM305,800 was spent on accommodations with Khir's suite in Orlando costing RM110,000.
The revelations were made today by PNSB chief executive officer Khairiyah Abu Hassan during an inquiry conducted by the state's Special Select Committee on Competence, Accountability and Transparency (Selcat).

TAIPING, March 31 – Campaigning for the Bukit Gantang and Bukit Selambau by-elections has run into a bizarre roadblock, with the police stepping in to dictate what PKR cannot say or do in the intense battle to win votes.
They must not mention Altan … err, a certain Mongolian model, now deceased.
A PKR source said that was one of the conditions police imposed on the party when it applied for ceramah permits.
A certain Ruler’s decision, matters of race and religion and other “sensitive” issues are also forbidden.
In addition, PKR must also ensure that the crowd at its ceramah is confined to a specific area where the event is being held.
Perak PKR deputy chief Chan Lih Kang told a press conference that the party would not appeal against the restrictions but would defy them and face the consequences.
“They cannot stop us from exercising our freedom of expression,” he said.
The same restrictions do not apply, apparently, to Pas, who have only been told to stop their ceramah by 11pm.
The murder of Altan … err, she-who-cannot-be-named, has proven to be acutely embarrassing for Umno’s new president and prime minister-in-waiting Datuk Seri Najib Razak, whose aide was acquitted of murder.
Najib has repeatedly denied ever meeting the woman.

Reading your comments I am struck by the fact that I would agree wholeheartedly with almost every point that you have made.
Yes, there is still sympathy amongst Malaysians and within PR for Hindraf’s plight; (I believe this is because there are no basic contradictions between both sets of goals)
Yes, they are poor at selling themselves, lack savvy & don’t communicate well, and this (and their methods) have turned many away from them; (50 years of oppressive conditioning has certainly left its mark)
Yes, they have a sectarian perspective (although their beliefs do not require the denial of the rights of others);
Yes, they are not cohesive, & lack leadership (most are locked up anyway);
Yes, there are some of their “leaders” with selfish personal interests;
This brings us to the question: What can we do about this?
The way I see it, there are 2 approaches we can take:
A) We give up on hindraf & their supporters, repudiate their struggle, tell them that we cannot work with them & that they are on their own
B) We engage them, establish what exactly they want, show them that fundamentally we want the same thing, listen to their fears & concerns (and they have raised some pertinent ones about PR), gradually raise their consciousness about the new political environment in Malaysia, and they themselves will expose & expel the mercenaries & cheats amongst them.
Option A would be undesirable because:
oIt’s unfair – we would be tarring all hindraf supporters with the same stereotype brush
oWe would strengthening our old enemy, and creating a new one, something that we do not need right now
Option B would have the following good points:
o We would be true to our own values of fighting for the weak, the oppressed, the marginalized (even if they themselves don’t realize it)
o We would be developing the wonderful but rare quality in any party of being able to accept criticism & work with diverse partners on common issues
o We would be responsive, transparent & respectful of our constituents, something BN never got around to doing
Is option B a pipedream? I don’t think so. But I have no illusions that it will be easy either. For one thing, the atmosphere is already charged with denunciation & counter denunciation, insult & counter insult. Both sides are standing behind their respective battle lines & shouting at each other through megaphones. If we are to get anywhere together, first we will have to stop the shouting & start respecting each other again, & with that noble aim in mind, let us be the first to extend our open hands in friendship.
