NS trainee collapses, dies

(Bernama) - KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 23 — A National Service (NS) trainee collapsed while performing the Zohur prayers at the Temasya Rimba Templer National Service Training Camp in Rawang, and later died at the Selayang Hospital, yesterday.

Syed Abdul Rahman Syed Ahmad, 17, from Kota Samarahan, Sarawak, was rushed to the Selayang Hospital at about 1.50pm but was pronounced dead about 50 minutes later.

“Medical record checks revealed that Syed Abdul Rahman did not have any medical problems and was active. He was always active in training at the camp,” said the National Service Training Department (JLKN) in a statement today.

According to JLKN records, the victim was only treated once for cough.

“The department will fly over his parents from Kuching, Sarawak and his body flown to Sarawak,” said the statement.

The incident has been classified as sudden death**.

Interlok: Chinese sell their daughters

If you thought ‘pariah’ was the worst insult there is in the novel ‘Interlok’, you’re mistaken.

It is filled with every conceivable racial stereotype of Indians and Chinese that you can think of, applied hodge-podge but in over-abundance to the main characters.

Below are scans from the book. We’re using the original, ISBN 983-62-5578-8. There is a new abridged version tagged ‘Edisi Murid’, edited for students however.

Pages 119-120: Kim Lock, the father of the Chinese main character Cing Huat, is depicted by the novelist Abdullah Hussain as someone quite prepared to sell a daughter.

Page 151: Kim Lock is tempted by the bad guy Paman Kok Leng to sell Cing Huat. Because Cing Huat is a boy, the father has qualms. However, he would consider the proposition if the child was a girl.

Pages 232-233:

‘Gua menyesal gua dapat dua [anak] lelaki saja. Kalau ada orang mau tukar anak lelakinya dengan Poh Eng dan Poh Kheng gua mau sekarang ini.’

Cing Huat, now a father himself, is portrayed by Abdullah as someone who is in turn prepared to trade his daughters (for boys) without second thought.

This novel is full of negative racial stereotypes and BTN-like slurs. Remember Nasir Safar (the prime minister’s aide) who resigned after the comment (below) attributed to him:

‘Indians came to Malaysia as beggars and Chinese especially the women came to sell their bodies’

‘Interlok’ is filled with the same characterizations of Chinese — prostitutes, womanisers, gamblers, cheats, scumbags, opium addicts, and more. Although the Chinese have no ‘pariah’ in their language, Abdullah Hussain portrays the ones who came here as debased creatures and from the dregs of society.

So you must be wondering why it is only the Indian NGOs and political parties that have raised complaints and nothing is heard from the Chinese even when they have been similarly subjected to the implied ‘pariah’ slurs?

Millions of ringgit spent for the programe yet they are doing a very crappy job about it.

Already 19 death ! How many more death do they want before they abolish NS service....this tragic happen every year without fail....they are incapable to run and manage the training camp ....the death toll tell all.

By the way- DAP's inability to "touch base" with the vast majority of Malaysian, PKR's shenanigans in party elections/Sabah/Sarawak & PAS's Malay/Islamist (PAS says will prioritize Malays) antics on the political front after getting the "taste of blood" is adds to the much needed flavour to the making of the "Failed-state Soup" by the Umno/BN cooks.

After a few words on FB with a certain YB from MCA- all I can say is that their foolishness is just beyond me. as much as I stretch my brains out to fit in their twisted logic, I just cannot find space for it. I wonder when the politicians of Malaysia will have the balls and brains to for once make some sense and tell the people- "IT'S THE ECONOMY, STUPID!"
(I don't know if anybody else saw it- maybe I was "smoking something", but just yesterday alone, I saw three different figure on the GDP- 6%, 6.5%, 7% and 7.2% ....).
The more I think about it, the more I begin to believe that violence - riots, repression, revolution or maybe even a war- would be inevitable sooner or later should our people politicians insist on playing UMNO's political game & refuse to see reason.
For Gottsakes- Malaysia is DYING!!
(and hence, I'm staying dressed up, & keeping my bags packed!)
Who knows- we may get lucky and get a dictator with some grey matter. Malaysia may be lucky & come out better after a temporary rule by a benevolent Military dictatorship which opens the way for a progressive democracy (as Gen Park Chung-hee of S.Korea did way back when he literally kicked butt to get out Korean brothers thinking & working again).

. I am not suprised at all with the decision of the High Court in Shah Alam that made the ruling that Badrul Hisham Abdullah is still the Port Klang assemblyman. It is like expecting a miracle to happen whenever a case involving any state assembly ruled by PR goes to court. The probability is like seeing a shooting star on a bright night. The disease which started in Perak has spread to the Malaysian Parliament and now to Selangor.

2. SLA in any state or the parliament is by designed to be a self regulatory institution that is supposed to make laws. Its decision on its member stays within the boundary of the SLA. Being self regulatory means the decision made according to the rules of the institution is binding on its members. The issue of challenging any decision of the SLA is like opening a pandora box. It leaves long lasting implication on our nation constitutional system.

3. If any decision of the SLA can be challenged then one day any law passed by the SLA or the parliament can be challenged by any man with creative thingking. I dread to see the day some smart lawyer goes to court and get an injunction against the parliament for making a law or the court ruled that a particular newly created law is unlawful.

4. The issue is not about who started it but rather who will start a process to halt it. I believe
it is the responsibility of all state government and the parliament to review the constitution
and make it water tight to ensure that it stays as a highest law making body which cannot be
challenged. This can only be done if all our ADUN and MP sees the importance doing it. Failing
which, then I see a disaster looming in this country.

to voluntarily participate with Suaram
and the Abolish ISA Movement (GMI)
to jointly support the demands of the people to abolish the ISA.

In the 1987 crackdown on Oct 27, 106 people -
mostly opposition leaders and a handful of MCA and Umno politicians -
were arrested under the ISA while the publishing permits for
The Star, Sin Chew Jit Poh and Watan were revoked.

I wanted to abolish the ISA but the police were against it”

What now, Egypt? "Islamic" Revolution?

Is that so?
I seriously doubt it - it is the fallacy promoted by those with vested interests.

For now, Egypt has won "liberation" from Mubarak, but the question remains -
Do they have the means to handle the revolution?
Have they really won "freedom"?
Do they know how to use that freedom?
As in the French Revolution, they may be a spate of blood-letting before they settle down ....

Of course I support them in their efforts at liberation as I do with those in Malaysia- it will be an ongoing struggle (albeit, an upward one). It will remain so, as long as they have had their revolution for all the wrong reasons.

I seriously doubt it - it is the fallacy promoted by those with vested interests. What was so "Muslim" about the demand for Democracy? I seriously doubt that the Muslim Brotherhood subcribes to "Democracy" - unless it is with the intention of establishing an "Islamic State".
There has yet to be anything recorded in history which would attest to what Anwar said here- even taking into consideration the "Islamic Civilisation".

Ignorant societies can always fight for change- however, if they seek for the change without knowing how exactly to get it or base the struggle on the wrong premise, they have a very big problem ....
Freedom needs a few prerequisites for it not to descend into anarchy- first and foremost, they need an enlightened leadership which the people look up to, associated with an "infastructure" (philosophical/legal/intelectual/media) and a society which is able to comprehend the vision.

Most Muslim/third-world countries don't fulfill the criteria- not by a long shot. What it often results in is the nurturing of another despot/dictator. Religious/tribal laws for one thing are an impediment to progress.
Examples of it litter the history books- and this was a phenomenon prevalent in the Middle Ages of Europe/ Papacy. Ironically, they broke free from the yoke of the "Holy" Roman Empire, through the efforts of an enlightened Catholic monk- Martin Luther!
But today, 500 yrs on- Islam is going through that same phase .....

I somehow believe that many of the opinions expressed there would prove to be prophetic.

Allow me to take this argument to another level- when man seek out third-rate minds who study religion to be "instruments of God" to run his life for him based on legends and outdated polity, it means only one thing - he is "lost".
When a man is "lost", he becomes psychologically/emotionally vulnerable to indoctrination using "dogma"- they backward the minds go the more they subcribe to the rule of inferior minds from religious schools of thought. They are taught that all it takes is worship and allegiance/obedience to the third-rate minds of their religious masters for things to fall in place in this "evil and cluttered world". They are indoctrinated to believe that supremacy of the clergy is the criteria for happiness and contentment and seats in heavenly abodes.
They are almost never told that there is no such thing as a utopia - man by nature is ever innovating, and is almost always discontented. It was precisely due to this reason that man has evolved to be intelligent beings as "God" intended man to be.

However, in most despotic authoritarian states, they seek to promote immitation and suppress this innovative streak in man. They promote "taqlid", and suppress "ijtihad" through religious edicts/cyclicals/indoctrination so as to prevent dissent.
At the same time, they'll tell the blunted minds of their followers that they have to be progressive but obedient to the state/godmen/God at all costs- to achieve "freedom & peace". At the same time, they have no qualms in waging war against those who do not conform .....
Their education/ "intellectual infrastucture" is often deliberately kept below par, so as to prevent their awakening. They are given easy access to "escape" through vice (drugs/crime/sex) so as to get relief from their frustrations & anger- while on the other hand, they'll tell you that it is all due to lack of religious observation/upbringing that these vices take place.
The media is deliberately restricted. The information they receive is often simplistic and distorted, if not downright stupid.
Then, when these stifled minds cannot comprehend the happenings of the real world, are unable to think and are lost for ideas- the clergy and politicians step in to advice them with simplistic solutions and give them the "comforts" they seek.

Do you see a striking parallel with what has been happening here in Malaysia over the last 30 yrs (just go to that "Valentine's Day Haram" Ustazah's FB discussion forums - you'll see many fans asking for miraculous "ayats" so that they can get this or that .... while she exploits them to market/peddle her wares/products)? Or many "Islamic" (and third world/African) countries for that matter ...

We await for our "Martin Luther" ....
