The Sound of Music ....

Azaan

  1. I love Siti Norhaliza. She has a beautiful voice with a matching face. I would say I truly enjoy her singing. One of my favorite numbers is Cindai, a song written by Hairul Anuar Harun. This melodious song will survive a 1000 years. The rhythm is an adaptation of old rhythm that is synonym with Zapin music from Johor which I suspect is probably hundreds of years old. Since she moved to my neighborhood, it is my hope that I will bumped into her while shopping for fish and vegetables at our local supermarket. So far no luck yet.

  2. By now everyone must be wondering why I am writing about Siti and the titled is Azaan. There are similarities when it comes to melody. When my daughter ask me why this people are burning effigies in Pantai over the issue of Azan, it was difficult for me to answer. I took her into my car and put on the Cindai CD. I told her to listen when the volume is set at 3. Both of us enjoyed the song. Then I raised the volume to 12 and my 8 year old girl said, "Papa tak best la …. Bring down the volume pa". Then I told her does she understand why people in the neighborhood complained about the Azaan? She said yes.

  3. The word Azaan is derived from the Arabic word "adhān", from the root word of "adhina" which means "to announce" or "to invite". The history of Azaan started in Medina when the prophet Mohamed pbuh consider various methods of informing the Muslim then the time pray. It was decided back then the way to announce the time for prayers is via the Azaan as to be different from the way of the Jews (which uses a horn) and Christians(which uses a bell). The objective is to announce time of prayer to people in the surrounding neighborhood. In this context the neighborhood within a particular mosque is known as the kariah member of the mosque.

  4. Like listening to Siti Norhaliza singing, I feel that it is important that the member of a kariah hear the Azan in a soothing manner. The technology is there which should be maximized. You don't need a 1000 MW speaker to blast an Azan because the people that are very close to the mosque will hear it as noise rather than Azan. We should look at using sound mapping tools, geographical terrain and putting repeater station in ensuring that all members of the kariah should hear a lovely soothing Azan. The technology is there and the solution is available. Allah gave us brain to think and use this technology in a way of goodness without offending others.

  5. Whatever the case maybe, I find this man in robes and burning effigies are bringing a foreign culture to our land. They are not defending Islam but rather defaming it. That picture is now circulated all over the globe showing how bad Muslims are. As a Muslim, I would like to urge the authorities to take action against this group of people for defaming Islam in such a manner. They have also incited unnecessary tension in their community. A complaint should have been addressed professionally and now by shouting and burning effigies. What they have done is totally unjust. As a Muslim, all I can say is "saya malu".

BERSIH 2.0: All Hell Breaks Loose with Proxy Voting « The People’s Parliament

PRESS STATEMENT

BERSIH 2.0 urges the Election Commission to withdraw its proposal of proxy voting, warning that all hell may break loose when proxy voting is abused, threatening even the legitimacy of the next government.

BERSIH 2.0 will organise a public forum later this month on absentee voting reform, which is the real solution to help address the issue of absentee voters. The coalition hopes EC Chairperson or his representative will participate as a panelist to respond to the public’s concerns.

BERSIH 2.0 stresses that proxy voting is highly vulnerable for democratizing countries like Malaysia because it may succumb to vote buying or coercion, resulting in disenfranchisement. Bosses may ask employees to sign away their voting rights.

So will superiors their subordinates, husbands their wives (or vice versa) and parents their children. In the most absurd scenario, loan sharks (Ah Longs) may even force every of their debtors to be registered as voters and then sign away their ballots, which can then be traded to political parties.

BERSIH 2.0 warns that, widespread disenfranchisement will erode the legitimacy of the new government – whichever parties are elected – and land the nation into political chaos. There are already enough allegations of bosses controlling employees’ voting in East Malaysia and under the current postal voting system, coerced proxy voting in military barracks and police stations.

BERSIH 2.0 says that the way to help address the issue of absentee voters is to make postal voting available to all and mandatory to none. All voters with reasonable grounds to be away from their constituency on polling day should be allowed to vote by postal ballots, provided they apply in advance, say, three weeks before polling day.
Under the current system, postal voting is imposed on military and police voters, but available as an option to only overseas bureaucrats and students and election officials.

BERSIH 2.0 expresses regret that the EC plans to propose 30 changes to the electoral process to the Cabinet without consulting civil society and political parties. Nothing was raised in BERSIH 2.0′s meeting with the EC last November.

BERSIH also criticizes the EC, whose independence is provided for by the Federal Constitution, for reducing itself to a subordinate body of the Cabinet by seeking the latter’s permission for any changes. It has failed to fulfill its constitutional mandate and, therefore, not gain public confidence.

Just Another Comment... on Syed Mokhtar the "tycoon genius".

The following was a comment on SakMongkol's recent post:-

Anonymous, 15 January 2011 15:09

It is not that we like Pakatan Rakyat but it is just that UMNO refuses to change. The ordinary rakyat is fed up.

What has been the highlight of the idiots of UMNO recently ?

1. The return of Ummi Hafilda, on prime time news no less. This really has to be the joke of the century. This is the best that UMNO can do.

2. Syed Mokhtar to buy Northport . He owns everything . For whom ? He has debts in excess of RM25 Billion. UMNO says there is no danger to the banking system as his debt is fenced off. Please - we are not fools. A debt is a debt . He has breached the law on the single customer limit. When he was negotiating abroad for various projects , his Arab partners literally laughed at his incompetency.

The Saudi Arabai Jizan project partners literally could not believe that Syed Mokhtar was the best Malaysia cpould produce. The same with the proposed Zain Mobile deal with the Kuwaitis. The Kuwaitis were not willing t do business with such an idiot . The Iranian gas project collapsed as Syed Mokhtar did not deliver on any of his promises.

At a meeting with the Iranians he assured them his investment in Iran would be kept a secret from the UN and the Americans. How stupid can you get ? The Iranian JV was splashed on the front pages on Malaysian newspapers ?

This guy can only survive in Malaysia as he has the two key traits loved by UMNO - stupidity and corrupt. Syed Mokhtar buys assets and monopolies from the government and borrows from UMNO banks ie Bank Muamalat , Bank Islam and Bank Rakyat . He cant survive outside this system let alone Malaysia.

He does a lot of business with Rosmah Mansor. Mumtaz Jaaafar is Mokhtars key ally right now acting as go between for Rosmah Mansor. Please ask around. Mumtaz i sthe key gatekeeper for Rosmah.

I know all this as I had front seat audience of Syed Mokhtars dealings.

3. All we hear of UMNO nowadays is kahwin . Everyone is getting married. Taib Sarawak is married and the flaunting his billions in public. Macam mana Dato sak ?

UMNO is doomed. If UMNO is reelected Malaysia will be doomed.

"Tabung Khas" for the Forcefully (& Faithfully) Retrenched/Unemployed ....

Tabung Khas Bantu Bekas Pekerja Premis Minuman Keras Yang Beragama Islam

by Khalid Ibrahim on Friday, 14 January 2011 at 18:03

Kerajaaan Selangor prihatin dengan perbincangan mengenai pelaksanaan Enakmen Jenayah Syariah yang tidak membenarkan umat Islam bekerja di premis-premis dan pusat hiburan yang menjual minuman keras.

More Here on Kalid Ibrahim's Facebook ....

*******************************
This is so "cool" ...
Can you imagine what a "prihatin" state Govt we have - they're really "dishing out prosthesis for those whose hands they have chopped-off" ....
But it is okay, God demands that from his faithful ... and now, everybody in Non-Halal industries can demand welfare.
FYI- I have no problems with Syariah compliance ... but do it well la ... give them time to seek alternative employment- don't adversely affect the livelihood of people all of a sudden ..... just give them time la.....
This is like chopping of ...your hand, then giving prosthesis and saying that we're "prihatin" ....

Here's a comment from another reader on FB (thanks, Manjit) (all emphasis, mine):-
Gill S. Manjit
Why not close all the business in MPSJ that serve Liquor, Starting with the SUNWAY HOTEL, SHERATON SUBANG, PAN-PAC SUBANG, ETC.

This unilateral "Little Napoleon" decision made on what grounds, please explain, why not enforce it with all the Hotels in SELANGOR, you cannot have different municipilities having different rules, make it a standard for the whole state, Than when you close down all these hotels will you also provide Welfare payments to ALL the affected staff?

You have People- irrespective of race working in the F&B industry, Fantastic Chefs, Waiter etc, who work very hard and are proud to earn an honest and decent wage to feed-Clothe-Educate-PAY MORTGAGES for their families, who are Independent, working not living off hand-outs. INCREDIBLY some "Napoleon" under your scope of responsibility has to decided to force PEOPLE OUT OF JOBS?

IS THE TAIL WAGGING THE DOG NOW?

This ridiculous unilateral decision forcing people out of Jobs and affecting the services of F&B outlets and their bottom line goes to show there is something totally insane going on here. Go ask a chef who earns RM5,000 a month to quit his job and get your welfare payments, HOW MUCH CAN YOU PAY HIM?
Will he be able to live the lifestyle he has been accustomed to and meet his obligations? WILL THE STATEGOVT ALSO BE PAYING HIS MORTAGE?
IS this the PAKATAN "RAKYAT" govt I voted for with the emphasis on RAKYAT, Will now SELANGOR follow Taliban policies, what next PURDAH?

Now I ask myself HOW WILL I VOTE COME NEXT ELECTIONS?

I ask this question because I am from the F&B/ Hotel Industry, A lot of my dear Muslim friends and colleagues will be affected with this silly decision. Is this what we will expect for future Selangor policies?

Why not find out by your wee self, go to Sheraton Subang and ask my fellow professional hoteliers, the Waiters the Chefs, the Stewards, Room service, Maintenance, Landscaping, etc weather they accept your ruling and want your welfare money.
Please come down from the withering clouds and meet the people. will they want your CHARITY?

(On another thread) These idiots made their little Napolean decision without thinking, who will get affected, you want to hit the small pubs and what not , no prob, If I own a pub and you do not apply the same standards to Sunway hotel- Sheraton-Pan-pac, I go to court and demand you follow your own rules, i.e. enforce your rule, why you close me down but not them?

Here is a question which has been bugging my mind,
WHY IS PAKATAN REPEATEDLY SHOOTING ITSELF IN THE FOOT?

TGIF- Now we ROCK (the mic)....

Muslims still needed to be reminded 5 times a day when to pray.
Despite the invention to alarm clock, reminder via the handphone
or even a reminder call from the hotel receptionists upon request.
So, okay, never mind that.

The Azan that is blasted off through the microphone 5 times a day,
365 days a year, 366 during a leap year.
After all, we must stay on top of the game by beating others,
such as the Hindu Temples, with their call to prayers .

So that's settled then. Azan rocks.

The events also reminded me of the posts on Shari Baity's blog (Lunch at the Lake Club) entitled
"Rock the Mic" should only be left to
the Rock & Rollers...

and
The not so simple letter that made the difference....

  • One painful type of torture being inflicted in our society, among the myriads of other kinds, is the merciless use of the loudspeakers.....
  • He does not spare even the sick and the weak among the neighbors who have no interest in receiving the sounds he mercilessly thrusts upon them......
  • They consider it a way to propagate their faith, and they sincerely believe that they are serving the cause of their faith. A wrong principle has taken root and is quite popular in our society now. Unfair deeds carried on with a fair intention are considered to be fine _ allowable and proper.
  • The fact is, the sincerity of intentions per se, does not make the deed proper. It is also necessary for the methods to be proper. And such a merciless use of the loud speakers is not only contrary to the basic principles of propagation and conveyance of faith, but it also produces exactly the opposite results.......
  • In the light of these ahadith and traditions, reciting the Quran loudly and disturbing those asleep during the salat of tahajjud is definitely not allowed. The Fuqaha (jurists) of the Muslim nation are unanimous in that. They have written that a person reciting the Quran in a loud voice at a time when people are asleep is actually committing a sin, even if he was on his own roof. (khulasatal fatawa vol I pg 103 and shami vol I pg 403 & 444)

*****************************************************
A text message has been circulating over the past few days urging Muslims to gather outside the mosque in Pantai Dalam here, claiming that a “Chinese lawyer” had demanded the mosque stop the “azan” (call to prayer) recital.
~Nurul Izzah urges calm in ‘azan dispute’

About 100 noisy protestors gathered outside Masjid Al-Ihkhlasias in Kampung Kerinchi to demonstrate against a non-Muslim lawyer who had allegedly complained about the volume of the azan (call for prayer).Unfurling banners and shouting Allahuakbar (God is great), the crowd also burned an effigy of the complainant.
~Protestors burn effigy of azan complainant, MalaysiaKini

Tulang Besi gave the following letter which Mr Ng Kian Nam had written to the various authorities (Click on thumbnails for the full size image of the letter letter) HERE.

I don't get it- why did Tulang Besi have to highlight that the complainant seeking justice was from MCA?
Couldn't he just concentrate on the facts presented by the complainant?
Was he trying to play the Muslim against the Kafir?
Does it always have to be about "Malays/Islam being challenged"?
Can't Malaysians ever stop looking through the sectarian telescope which shrinks the voice of "reason" & conscience in them?
Anyways- It is quite likely that the "Imam" had taken it personally since it was highlighted that it was only for the past few months that the volume had become unbearable.

I found the response from the police laughable - "lagi kuat bunyi itu, lagi baik" - the rationale being that the "bunyi sembahyang masjid" does not come under noise polution laws which governs residential zones. Is this another of "selective inerpretation & application" of the law?

Don't mean to "insult" anybody's sensitivities, but I really do not see how these demonstrators can come out & say that Islam is being challenged when people simply ask them to be reasonable. Is it too much to ask of them to be a consciencious muslim who cares for a peaceful neighbourhood in an age where people can buy alarm clocks (even with the Azan too!!), or just play a tape of scripture reading/sermons/prayers in their home if they so desire to hear it at any time?

Since as a kafir's word wouldn't carry much weight in Islam (as some understand it), I once again quote Mufti Taqi Usmani:-

"In the light of these ahadith and traditions, reciting the Quran loudly and disturbing those asleep during the salat of tahajjud is definitely not allowed.
The Fuqaha (jurists) of the Muslim nation are unanimous in that.

UMNO'S NEW LIFEGUARD?

**********************************************

UMNO'S NEW LIFEGUARD?

Ummi Hafilda Ali wants to sue to save the country. This a new twist on How to be a Millioniare. People sacrifice their lives to save their country but this @#^*## wants money to save her country. Mercenaries do that, no? She forgot to sue her father for disowning her. Like the pied piper she intends to draw out all the denizens of our sewers . (Aside: Taiping Tiger admonished me for insulting sewer rats in my previous postings.) I lam averse to insulting ladies but this one’s had seems to be as empty as a hermit’s address book! If she is UMNO’s new lifeguard, many in UMNO would eventually drown. Beats me…. If being dumb was a crime, she’d be in jail in no time. In a lying contest, the judges would disqualify her with “No professional liars allowed.” Dang I’m impressed how long some are able to live without a brain. Some women are so fake; they will make barbie look real!

If I hurt your feelings in any way I just want you to know from the heart of my bottom of that I don’t care

I’d continue in this vein….… But I was raised NOT to make fun of the mentally challenged…

You’re lucky!
